Understanding Data Center Tier Classifications
The Uptime Institute's Tier Classification System is a global standard for rating data center performance, reliability, and fault tolerance. This section provides an overview of the different Tier levels and certification types. Click on each item to learn more.
Provides dedicated IT space with cooling and UPS. Single, non-redundant distribution paths. Maintenance requires shutdown. Expected uptime: 99.671%.
Adds redundant capacity components (power, cooling). Still single distribution path. Maintenance of path requires shutdown. Expected uptime: 99.741%.
Multiple independent distribution paths. Components maintainable without IT disruption. Susceptible to unplanned failure if it impacts the active path. Expected uptime: 99.982%.
Highest reliability. Any single unplanned equipment failure or path interruption will not impact IT operations. Concurrently maintainable. Expected uptime: 99.995%.
Verifies design plans meet Tier requirements. Early-stage validation.
Assesses the actual built facility via on-site inspections and tests. Higher assurance than TCDD.
Most comprehensive. Evaluates infrastructure, management, and operations practices (staffing, training, maintenance). Bronze, Silver, Gold levels.
